Discworld Monthly - Issue 270 - July 2019

Issue 270

1. Editorial

Welcome to issue 270 of Discworld Monthly. We've been extremely busy here at Discworld Monthly towers - we've been working on another project that has taken up so much of our time so we apologise for not getting this issue out at the end of July.

We also wanted to hold out to see if Troll Bridge won anything at Gen Con in the US and we were so pleased when it was announced that Troll Bridge had been awarded Best Fantasy Film.

Yay! Go Troll Bridge - the award winning epic short film!

2.2 Book, Diary and Calendar release news.

The Ankh Morpork Archives got announced last month with a release date of 14th November 2019. R.R.P. is 25GBP and it is published by Gollancz.

We know it has some additional bits written by Stephen Briggs and better quality images by Paul Kidby.

The publisher's blurb ..

"Think you know Ankh-Morpork? Think again.

In this top-secret guide, travellers will receive a first-hand experience of the real city. If you've ever wondered where Unseen University students wet their whistles (while managing to avoid their teachers doing the same) , or just what the Assassins' Guild constitutes a proper means of inhumation - there are standards to be upheld, after all - then this is the book for you.

That's right, have yourselves a peek into the inner workings of city's societies. Cut the chaff, glimpse behind the curtain, see how the sausage gets made . . . err, you get the idea.

Just don't let the Thieves' Guild catch you with this book. They won't appreciate their methods being flogged behind their back. Flogging's their job.

Completely revamped and redesigned, this full-colour book contains material from Discworld Diaries across the decades"

Death and Friends: A Discworld Journal

Written by Terry and the team at The Discworld Emporium, this Journal is due out on the 8th of August and its R.R.P. is 16.99GBP, it's published by Orion Publishing

The publisher's blurb …

There's nothing like a journal to get you thinking about life, the universe, and a Disc suspended by four elephants standing atop a giant turtle. Who better to help you than Death, Sir Terry Pratchett's most enduring anthropomorphic personification? He's seen it all.

With space aplenty to plan your daily routines, express your wildest dreams, or write your life story, you'll be aided and abetted by Death's wit, wisdom and observations along the way. Fill the pages how you like, there's no wrong way to live a life. Or complete a journal.

So come along, brief mortal, and make the most of Death's OUTSIDE PERSPECTIVE.

You can pre-order from our affiliate links if you want just a copy or you can splash out and buy one from the Discworld Emporium which will get you an exclusive bookmark with your copy (or if you are not careful, a second mortgage and a house full of wondrous things from looking around their website)

Price for the celestial edition is a staggering 6,666GBP (with postage extra if you're outside of the UK) I knew I'd have to sell a kidney, but didn't realise I'd have to sell one from every family member as well.

Discworld Monthly replies: It really is a staggering amount for a book. But what you are getting is a highly crafted piece of Pratchett / Gaiman history. It's far more than we could ever afford, hells, we couldn't afford the lesser versions but for those that can afford them I am sure it will be something very special.

* * * * *

* From: "T Carpenter"

I was delighted by the TV adaptation of Good Omens - so much so that I can't easily put it into words. My feelings are literally ineffable. It's without question the best book-to-screen adaptation I've seen.

This got me thinking however that the Discworld novels have always translated well to stage, if not (IMHO) to screen. I would love to see a theatre adaptation of Good Omens now, post-tv-series. Failing that, please could I encourage anyone putting on a Discworld play in future to include a cameo appearance for Crowley and Aziraphale. Just like Death, they'd probably bring the house down!

Rachel replies : There is a musical stage version of Good Omens in the works. They have been working on it for several years now in Australia. Snippets of it and WIP versions have been shown to the public. If it ever gets completed though is anyone's guess.

* From: "Bryan"

Hi Jason and Rachel. I can understand your frustration at the lack of support for Troll Bridge in St Kilda, especially as you are so passionate and loyal yourselves. Thanks for the marvelous newsletter.

I'm originally from Port Talbot and know the trip well to llanelli; great to see Discworld flourishing there. I have lived in New South Wales for some decades and can tell you that the trip from Sydney to Melbourne is about a 10-14 hour drive depending on levels of incontinence. Flying there and back and staying the weekend would set you back about 400 quid pp. Perth is a 45 hour drive with an empty milk bottle under the seat.

Even within these large cities (4 million in Melbourne) it is difficult to get across them as traffic is packed from 3pm till 7pm on a weeknight and Saturday mornings are usually as bad. So in response I make a humble request that you even it out by having a gentle dig at people from Inverness and Paris for not making the trek to West Wales. Of course, if there were people there from those far off places then we Australians will hang our heads in shame.However, having defended non victorians I concur, where were the good people of South and East Melbourne?

Jason replies: We got many letters last month like this one from our Antipodeans friends. My point wasn't meant to be an attack. Although many considered it such. I was simply trying to make the point that unless we support the likes of Troll Bridge, Good Omens etc. the powers that be won't bother to make them. So to anyone that took offence I apologize, BUT the point is still valid even if the delivery wasn't the best.

"THE AMAZING MAURICE/ WILL BE THE FIRST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM

ADAPTATION OF A SIR TERRY PRATCHETT BOOK."

Really, I'm sure I recall really enjoying Going Postal, Soul Music, Wyrd Sisters, Hogfather, The Colour of Magic (and am looking forward to Trolls bridge :-))

I believe a couple of the Johnny books were also done.

Doesn't fill me with confidence!

Jason replies: All the adaptations you mention were TV adaptations not feature films. It's a small but important difference.

* * * * *

* From: "Kieran Green"

It was a thrill to read about the possibility of an animated version of The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents. However, the early concept art and comments from the producers raise some worrying doubts about their ability to render an adaptation that's true to the book. Misnaming Malicia is a small detail, but not irrelevant. The name isn't random - it's a direct connection to her aunts Agoniza and Eviscera. The mistake suggests the producers haven't read the book with enough attention to detail, and are missing jokes. But more critically, the concept art shows the rats wearing clothing, which is just wrong. PTerry makes a very specific point about how the rats tried to wear clothing, to emulate Mr. Bunsy, but it just didn't work (apart from Darktan's tool belts and Sardines' hat) . It's important, because it's a key part of demonstrating that the Clan aren't just small humans. They're intelligent rats. Putting clothes on them is just Disney-fying them. Diminishing them. Hopefully the producers will take the time to really get to know this book better, understand its messages, and deliver a faithful rendition.

*Rachel here*

We may not be perfect designers, or award winning journalists but we do our best to keep you all entertained and informed about all things Terry. We do have some ethics though. We like our news to be current, up to date and factual with a solid source. We don't like posting rumours but occasionally the source it comes from is 98 percent solid so we will tell you it's a rumour and confirm it when we have a 100 percent confirmation. Our own articles are written by us for us only. You won't find articles from other publications here unless it's a formal press release about an adaptation, book release or event or something we actually wrote for someone else unless they begged us to publish it (OK not begged but some of our lovely friends do ask us occasionally to boost something) . [NB I say we are not award winning but Discworld Monthly did win Website of the Month for Issue 3 back in a different century. It would be nice to win something much more recent, or even just get acknowledged #justsaying]

Whilst you keep reading it, we'll keep on writing it because we love Terry's books just as much as you do.
