Discworld Monthly - Issue 269 - June 2019

Issue 269

1. Editorial

Welcome to our June 2019 issue of Discworld Monthly (it was going to be Issue 267 but we ended up sending out two extra editions in May) .

One of the extra issues was an attempt to encourage Australian Discworld fans to go to St. Kilda's film festival to see the screening of Troll Bridge. After the success of getting nearly 400 people to visit the small town of Llanelli in West Wales we though we get quite a few people to turn up to a showing in Melbourne. Apparently the Australian Discworld fans let us down with less than a dozen making it to the show. It's all the more disappointing that Troll Bridge is a home grown Australian production. I don't want to be down on fellow fans, but we as a fandom HAVE to go out and actively support these projects not just passively wait for them. It we don't then the desire to make them will simply reduce and talented people won't make an effort to produce more. Troll Bridge will be screening at Film Festivals elsewhere, please make the effort to go to these screenings. Troll Bridge looks amazing on a huge screen and deserves to be seen and supported.

2.1 The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents - Animated Film

The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents is being made into an animated film, Narrativia made the announcement earlier this month with a budget of 15 million Euros.

The poster which shows Maurice looks amazing and we have some concept artwork to show you of some of the other characters including Keith, Malicia, Maurice, Darktan and Peaches.

Maurice Poster
Concept Character Artwork

Terry Russio has written the screenplay with Toby Genkel attached as Director. Carter Goodrich who worked on Brave and Ratatouille is the character designer.

Ulysses Filmproduktion is making the film alongside Cantilever Media. You can read the full press release over on Narrativia's website.

We have already noticed some discrepancies however between the book and what the filmmakers are suggesting in the press release.

Emely Christians, Producer and CEO of Ulysses Filmproduktion refers to Malicia Grim as Melissa within the press release "'If you don't turn your life into a story, you become part of someone else's story,' says Melissa, the young female lead in The Amazing Maurice. I loved the way Melissa presented her attitude to life in this one sentence. When I read it, I knew we had to turn this amazing novel into an amazing film... "

I hope this is a mistake and they don't muck about with the names of the other characters, that said, we are so excited by the look of TAMAHER and cannot wait until 2022 to see the finished film on the screen.

2.2 Good Omens Soundtrack CD

Good Omens soundtrack by the amazing David Arnold is heading for a CD release on the 5th July 2019.

With 62 tracks including A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square by Tori Amos, this two disc extravaganza is looking more awesome by the day. With Crowley gracing 1 Disc and Aziraphale the other, this doesn't just sound good , but it looks good too.

2.3 Good Omens DVD/Blu-Ray/SteelBook Releases

We touched on these back in our special Good Omens/Troll bridge issue earlier this month but in case you missed it, here it is again.

The BBC are the ones in charge of handling the DVD/Blu-Ray releases and this ultimately means we all have to wait until its been shown on the BBC before they release it to the world. Currently a tentative date of June 2022 has been put on the Steel-Book Blu-ray release which is (in my opinion) possibly off by a year.

This is because the BBC must be allowed to show it on BBC Two and be allowed to sell it to syndicate channels around the world before it gets released on disc.

Currently the timeline works like this. Amazon Prime released Good Omens at the end of May 2019 - BBC will follows suit six months later - then six months after that they can sell it to other channels worldwide. THEN it can be released onto disc for the general public to buy. Well that is the theory. Based on this timeline, we'll get it towards the end of 2020/beginning of 2021. .

Currently you can pre-order the DVD, the Blu-ray and the Steel-Book from our affiliate link.

It's also available to a pre-order for the same price in a couple of other places that we don't have affiliate links for, but I am sure you all know how to use Google to find them.

2.5 Convention News

In the last month there has been two big announcements from two very different conventions.

Don't forget you can find out about Conventions all over the world on our Event page

* * * * *

Llamedos Holiday Camp 6th - 8th March 2020

It was announced at the European Premiere of Troll Bridge in Llanelli that the Llamedos Holiday Camp will be happening in Wales from the 6th-8th March 2020. The Llamedos Holiday Camp is the name for the Welsh Discworld Convention and they have chosen to stay away from the traditional convention term as they aim to be a completely different experience.

Unlike most conventions they aim to bring a piece of the Discworld to the roundworld and have chosen to bring the Discworld equivalent of a holiday camp to the table of events.

It will be an exclusive event with only 150 weekend tickets available but there will be a smattering of day tickets released once weekend tickets have sold out.

Their remit is to have no guests, no panels, and no talks but 1,2 many, lots of fun activities which Discworld families would have taken part in on a Holiday Camp in Llamedos.

What that means remains to be seen as their website isn't quite ready to go fully live but they do have a newsletter sign up form on their homepage at llamedosholidaycamp.com and a Facebook page with an associated facebook group.

What we do know is that they will be including all evening meals (except dessert) and their Costume Ball ticket in their ticket price.

They haven't announced a location yet but we can safely say it will be just outside Llanelli in South Wales.

Tickets are due to go on sale as soon as the Clacks Master wrangles the new ants into Hex's new Ramparts.

* * * * *

International Discworld Convention - 7th -10th August 2020

In contrast, the International Discworld Convention has announced their date and location for their 2020 event which will be held at the Birmingham Hilton Metropole Hotel from the 7th - 10th August 2020.

If you haven't signed up to their newsletter for news on when tickets go on sale, we suggest you head over to 2020.dwcon.org and do so right away.

2.6 Troll Bridge on Tour

Troll Bridge is being screened all over the world, and here's the important bit YOU MUST GO AND SEE IT AND SHOUT ABOUT IT!

I know that is a random statement but we are hearing of screenings where just five or six Discworld fans are making it known that they are there.

This isn't just disheartening for us to hear, but also for the hundreds of people who poured their heart and soul into making the film.

It won't be getting a commercial release so these showings may be the only time you get to see it on the big screen. DON'T WASTE THAT OPPORTUNITY!

Here's the current showing list and how to get tickets for some of these.

4. Review: Good Omens TV series

Review by Jason Anthony-Rowlands

Available now worldwide via Amazon Prime Video and later via the BBC in the UK and even later syndicated to other countries.

Good Omens the TV series is very faithful adaptation of an amazing novel. Having Neil Gaiman (one half of the authoring team) adapt meant that the true core of the story has been kept alive and well. There are some variations to the novel. Some extra bits have been added, some characters expanded and some scenes and characters dropped altogether. Sadly some of my favourite scenes from the novel never made it to the screen and I suspect that budget and timing issues made it impossible to include them. It's a shame but its a sacrifice I understand needed to be made.

The cast are for the most part excellent. I'm not 100% convinced by Adria Arjona as Anathema Device. There was nothing wrong with her performance but she just wasn't how I imagined her character from the novel. I would have liked to have seen more of Josie Lawrence as Agnes Nutter. The rest of the cast were spot on with the on screen charisma / chemistry of David Tennant and Michel Sheen shining through the heart of the story.

Good Omens is an exceptionally well crafted piece of television and I am so glad that it was decided to use television rather than cinema as a medium for it. I've seen a vision of what Discworld could look like on the screen and it's six hours of quality footage per story.

With the recent success of Game of Thrones and Stranger Things, it shows that a good story will adapt well to television. Something that even ten years ago wouldn't have been possible. Good Omens is a very good example of how well Terry and Neil's work can be handled on the screen. I look forward far more optimistically than I did before.

5. Review: Troll Bridge

Review by Jason Anthony-Rowlands

Now it's no secret that we at Discworld Monthly have been following the progress of Troll Bridge since its inception many years ago when a much younger Daniel Knight put out a request for 250 backers. This pre-dated Kickstarter by a few years. I was one of the original backers of the project so have a vested interest in it.

We watched the final version of Troll Bridge at the Carmarthen Bay Film Festival in Llanelli with around 400 fellow Discworld fans. Some had never seen any iterations of the film others like myself had seen several previous test screenings, but none of them as complete as this version.

The film looks majestic from the amazing helicopter panoramic views (filmed in New Zealand) to the incredible bridge set the film is full of incredible detail. The film almost looks too good. It certainly looks like a large budget film (not one that costs less that most TV commercials these days) .

Daniel and his crew and the acting skills of Don Bridges (Cohen) and John Jenkins (Mica) really brings out the character of this story. And it really is a character story, for all the special effects (apparently there are more sfx shots in Troll Bridge than the first Lord of the Rings movies) , it's a drama about two very different characters reminiscing about the old times, about how things were and how things should be. For all their differences Mica and Cohen really aren't that far apart. Troll Bridge is a touching, funny and beautifully crafted film and I love it.

If you get a chance to watch it at a film festival do go and see it on the big screen. The film really deserves to be seen. And if you haven't yet backed the film you can still pre-order your copy from trollbridge.film

I'd like to put in appeal for translations of P'Terry books into Welsh, I know there are a number including the Johnny Maxwell books but I have not been able to track them down. (Apart from Lleidr Amser - [Thief of Time - the only Discworld novel so far to be translated - Ed]) .

I'm not able to get to my classes at the moment, so I want to read good books. Happy to pay a reasonable price and postage. Many thanks, J. Barnard. Please message with a P'Terry heading.

Jason replies: Would you like to see more Welsh editions of Terry's books. I can't wait to see what they do with Imp-y-celin if they translated Soul Music!

Fantastic edition of DW Monthly, even though if filled me with longing and envy for all the things I missed.

While I know some people give you grief about typos, they aren't always a bad thing and can often raise a grin with the unintended words they make, my favorite today is: 'Neil with members of the cats'. It just makes it sound even cooler.

Thank-you for one of my monthly highlights and filling my world with all things DW!

Jason replies: Glad we managed to make you smile.

* From: "Dave Hough"

I do love reading the News Letters etc,but get really confused about all the different types of Good Omens Books for sale now. I have an old original copy and refuse to buy a Good Omens new super duper illustrated one off deluxe hardback in new illustrated cover and slip case and continue and continue. I'm not too sure if this is really the way forward for original readers and collectors of Terrys Books, just for people with pots of money.

Please tell me that all the new "stuff" is going to Charity,or a percentage of it, to Alzeimers - I hope so, I know we cant have any new original Books, and it's great to keep Sir Terry Pratchett's "memory" alive, but I do think that these new Good Omens Merchandise are a bit too much.

Please feel free to criticise me, it's just my own personal thought though.

Jaron replies: I can see where you are coming from David. But we don't HAVE to purchase them all. Keep saying that, then one day you might believe it.

*Rachel here*

We may not be perfect designers, or award winning journalists but we do our best to keep you all entertained and informed about all things Terry. We do have some ethics though. We like our news to be current, up to date and factual with a solid source. We don't like posting rumours but occasionally the source it comes from is 98 percent solid so we will tell you it's a rumour and confirm it when we have a 100 percent confirmation. Our own articles are written by us for us only. You won't find articles from other publications here unless it's a formal press release about an adaptation, book release or event or something we actually wrote for someone else unless they begged us to publish it (OK not begged but some of our lovely friends do ask us occasionally to boost something) . [NB I say we are not award winning but Discworld Monthly did win Website of the Month for Issue 3 back in a different century. It would be nice to win something much more recent, or even just get acknowledged #justsaying]

Whilst you keep reading it, we'll keep on writing it because we love Terry's books just as much as you do.
